The title of the Interspaces series refers to the architectural concept of the interstice: a transitional zone that connects spaces without itself being an endpoint. From this perspective, the portraits are approached as images in transition. They seem to be constantly shifting between appearing and disappearing, between presence and absence.

The creative process, too, has its origins in an in-between space. The image does not emerge from a blank support, but from an initial layer of warm colours, which is created indirectly between the fire and the support. Only then does the soot begin to take shape, and the image gradually takes form.

Through transparent layers, shifts and interruptions, the portrait remains recognisable, yet never fully reveals itself. It eludes any unambiguous interpretation, so that the focus is not so much on what is visible, but on what is happening between the layers

The ‘interspace’ referred to in the title is ultimately to be found not only within the image, but also in the act of perceiving it. The gaze moves constantly between what becomes visible and what once again eludes us. This gives rise to an image that does not fix a single meaning, but explores the experience of looking itself: a constant interplay between perception and imagination.
